Alex Pall and Drew Taggart Form the Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers are DJs Alex Pall and Andrew “Drew” Taggart. The New York based band formed in 2012 when the two men were introduced by mutual friend and band manager Adam Alpert. Pall and Taggart both worked in different Museums and were both looking for a chance to step up their DJ careers. Alpert thought the two of them together would make a great team, and he brought them together. Their chemistry was quick and easy and they soon formed the Chainsmokers. They quit their day jobs and Taggart moved from Maine to be closer to Pall in New York City, and they began rehearsing and practicing together full-time. After over a year of this, they made their debut performance in September of 2014 at Terminal 5, as the opening act for Timeflies. Soon after they began releasing their own prerecorded music.

The duo have released several EP’s and a full-length album in the traditional manner, the Chainsmokers are known for regularly releasing free singles through their website. These singles are not just a thank you to the fans in the form of free, new music: They also serve to keep the Chainsmokers regularly having new material for play in clubs and on the radio. In addition to these benefits, the singles can often serve as an experimental format for trying new things in their music.

The Chainsmokers are known for blending other music genres into their dance/electronic style. As big fans of many forms of music, Pall and Taggart enjoy splicing these interest into traditional dance/electronic music and creating a style all their own. They also enjoy collaboration with other DJs and musicians, often explored on single releases.

In addition to these steps outside the traditional boundaries of their chosen musical genre, Pall and Taggart also push the boundaries further by providing their own vocals on some songs. They write some tunes about emotional states and events in their lives and will bring their own voices to these expressions. When singing live the two have become fond of using live instruments in their performances for an audience.
